Keystone State Wrestling Alliance (KSWA) Owner Shawn Blanchard late last week announced the four participants in the 7th Annual Joe Abby Memorial Tournament, and at least one Megastar’s name could be called a surprise.

“The Drunken Luchadore” Joey Quervo will take on former two-time KSWA World Champion “Dr. Devastation” Lou Martin in first-round competition. In the other contest, The Bulldozer will face off against Lord Zoltan.

Blanchard, who won the initial Joe Abby Memorial Tournament in 2008, chose not to enter the contest himself, but insert his longtime VIP running mate Martin into the mix instead. From 2008-2011 the Tournament had been a one-night Single’s affair. For the past two years, the KSWA Championship Committee switched things, making it a tag-team tournament. But with Blanchard the owner this year, he returned the tournament to its roots.

Martin has been a staple in the tourney. In addition to winning it in his first outing, Martin made it to the finals but lost to The Latin Assassin in 2010. Martin lost a found-round match to ultimate champion Mitch Napier in 2011.

Contrast that to Quervo, Zoltan and Bulldozer. None of those Megastars have ever competed in the Joe Abby Memorial Tournament before. Last year, Quervo and Super Ginger lost to the Mercenaries in a qualifying match for the Abby Tournament, and did not advance to the official tournament.

The Joe Abby Memorial Tournament was named for “Killer” Joe Abby a Studio Wrestling standout who spent much of his life in the Lawrenceville area. Abby also wrestled as “The Red Demon” and tagged with Frank Durso. Both Abby and Durso were the first inductees into the KSWA Hall of Fame in 2008.

Blanchard added Quervo to this year’s tournament based on his “thrilling” win over Sniper at KSWA “Revenge” on February 22. The Drunken Luchadore’s last win was against “Diamond” Dave Diamond on October 6, 2012. Quervo’s last win before that was February 19, 2011 against The Great Toyota. Blanchard and Quervo have a rich history. Quervo lost his debut match to then-KSWA World Champion Shawn Blanchard on November 18, 2000. Quervo’s first KSWA win came on February 1, 2003 at the Bloomfield V.F.W against Biker Al. On December 1, 2007, Quervo and La Lucha defeated the International Thugs—Ali Kaida and “Big” Mike Malachi—for the KSWA Tag Team Championship. They would hold the straps until May 3, 2008. That would be Quervo’s only gold, and the highlight of his KSWA career up to this point. A decidedly upset win in the tournament would make a resurgence of his career.

The first-round match between Bulldozer and Lord Zoltan promises to be interesting. More than 300 in attendance at Revenge were surprised to see Zoltan hold his own against the 366-lb. Bulldozer. The crafty Zoltan may have a more difficult time with Bulldozer in one-one-one competition, especially with Dozer’s manager Mayor Mystery at ring side. Mayor Mystery was a long-time manager of Lord Zoltan before the KSWA Hall of Famer (Class of 2012) joined Justin Sane to form the most successful KSWA tag team of all time, Party Gras. The 7th Annual Joe Abby Memorial Tournament is held on Saturday, March 29 at the Home of Professional Wrestling in Pittsburgh, the KSWA Arena. Bell time is 7:30. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for kids. Card is subject to change.
